Beijing duck sticks

IMG_5392

Pocky, Pretz and other snacks have started coming out with some unusual flavors just like their big brother the potato chip. One of the versions of Pretz is a Beijing duck flavored biscuit stick. Now that sounds promising. I’ve had Beijing duck a few times here in China, and it’s always nice.

For the real Beijing duck, you roast a duck and serve it in a pancake with some cucumber, spring onion and hoi sin sauce. The sauce gives the dish much of the flavoring. These sticks, however, don’t taste anything like the real deal. They have a concentrated and salty flavor that I can only describe as bouillon cubes.

If you told me someone had crushed up some stock cubes and sprinkled that over the biscuit sticks, I would believe you straight away. It’s too salty for my taste, and has nothing to do with Beijing duck.
